The N.W.A. years
In 1987, Ice Cube formed the rap group N.W.A (Ni**az With Attitude), consisting of Himself, Dr. Dre, fellow rapper Arabian Prince, ex-drug peddler Eric "Eazy-E" Wright, Master of Ceremonies Lorenzo "Ren" Patterson, and DJ Antoine "Yella" Carraby.
Following Arabian Prince's early departure, Cube contributed heavily to the group's success by writing the lyrics for the song "Boyz-n-the-Hood" (performed by Eazy-E), as well as half the songs for N.W.A's debut album Straight Outta Compton, such as the eponymous track and the infamous "Fuck tha Police," a scathing commentary on police brutality in the United States.

In 1989, however, Ice Cube left the group following contract issues with manager Jerry Heller.
